Startup of DAPL leads Bakken to trade at a premium to WTI in WY.


In the US, the startup of Energy Transfer Partners (ETP) 520K-b/d Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) has pushed Bakken crude to a 10¢/bbl premium to WTI at Guernsey, WY (US), the first time Bakken has traded at a premium to WTI in WY since 2015. Increased shipments of Bakken crude south via DAPL have left less volumes available to move west to Guernsey via Kinder Morgan's Double H line, as well as the Belle Fourche and the Enbridge Platte pipeline. From Guernsey it can move south and east via pipe to Cushing, OK and Wood River, IL, or south and west to Colorado and Utah.

Jenna Delaney, an analyst with Platts Analytics' Bentek Energy, said "During the 2014 to 2016 timeframe we saw quite a bit of pipeline capacity added in PADD IV, which was followed shortly after by production falling in both the DJ and Bakken due to lower prices. This has resulted in the overall pipeline system in PADD IV being utilized at around 50% over the past year. Then, you throw Dakota Access on top of that, and even more barrels are diverted away from Guernsey. With so much spare takeaway capacity available, it's not surprising that differentials have compressed." (Aug 3)
