A new white paper from the UK government titled "Industrial Strategy: Building a Britain Fit for the Future" has urged the use of fracking to develop British shale gas resources as development of the UK shale sector "offers the prospect of creating jobs, enhancing the competitiveness of downstream sectors and building up supply chains." Ken Cronin, the CEO of UK Onshore Oil and Gas (UKOOG), the trade organization estimates that development of UK shale resources can generated a further 64K jobs while also creating a new stream of tax revenue. "Domestic shale gas production has the potential to secure the UK's energy supply by reversing our increasing reliance on gas imports, providing benefits for both our economy and the environment. By using the natural gas we have just a mile under our feet, we ensure that we have the means to heat the 84% of UK homes dependent on gas for the coming decades, and that our industries have the vital feedstocks they need to keep the UK moving."
While the UK has now expressed support for fracking, London mayor Sadiq Khan has said that any application for the exploration, appraisal, or production of shale gas via fracking the in London boroughs should be rejected. "There is absolutely no place for fracking in London and I remain firm in my belief that any such application must be refused." (Nov 27, 29)
